The three primary components of a successful ADA program in your facility are as follows:

1. It must be designed correctly. Attention to details is important, regardless of how minor they may seem. For example, the lack of maneuvering clearance at doorways is a HUGE barrier to people using mobility devices – these “small” details must be included in the construction documents for the contractors to follow.

2. Once it is designed correctly, it must then be constructed as designed. This includes ALL the “small” details – contractors need to pay attention to what is on every page of the plans.

3. The most challenging part is maintaining accessibility. Educating employees about accessibility is critical. For instance, If they do not know why there is a large empty space next to the door in the restroom, the cleaning staff will automatically think that is the perfect place to put a trash can. The PROBLEM is that empty space is required clear floor space, that a person with a mobility device uses to read the door and open it without getting hit.

Don’t despair, prepare. These issues may seem difficult to address, so let us help you.
